Natural Health Spas: Relax.

When you need to relax and rejuvenate, natural health spas can be a lifesaver. But what should you expect at one? What features and benefits can you look forward to? Here is a brief overview and some things to consider before making a spa appointment.

Day Spas in general provide massage therapy, aromatherapy, facials, skin care, body wraps, and other services. They are generally beauty- and relaxation-focused, but not all treatments are natural. If you're simply looking for a good massage and relaxation in a steam room, you'll be fine at most spas in this category.

Medical Day Spas generally fall into one of three categories:

  • Cosmetic (may include Botox and laser hair removal)
  • Wellness (with a conventional or alternative approach, or both)
  • Dental Spas (a more pleasant experience for routine dental care)

Remember that not all of these have a natural health spa focus. As mentioned above, some offer Botox treatments and skin ex-foliating chemical peels, neither of which are recommended by naturopathic practitioners.

Natural Health Spas are a relatively small niche in the spa industry. Spas in this category offer a holistic approach to wellness, with natural weight loss, detoxification programs, exercise and massage.

Other programs and treatments include natural hormone therapy, nutrition consultation, psychological counseling, medical consultation, natural herbal remedies, homeopathy, a health fast, acupuncture, basic health assessments, mud baths, and more.

Some offer stays as long as four weeks for intensive healing. These packages usually include health assessments, therapy sessions, detoxifying diets, physical treatments and more.

Looking for a day spa in Washington DC, day spa in San Diego or elsewhere? Tip: check the Medical Spa Association web site or contact the Day Spa Association to find one locally. ------------------------------------------------------------------

Book your appointment, package or stay early to ensure availability. Some locations are booked well in advance. Discuss health needs and conditions at this time so the staff can make necessary preparations and recommendations. Mention your objectives and what you hope to gain from the spa to ensure a good fit.

Learn the particular etiquette of the spa you choose. Are gratuities included? Is nudity common or is there an emphasis on privacy? Find out the answers ahead of time so you know what to expect.

Taking a trip to a natural health spa, whether your stay be a few hours or a few weeks, offers you a chance to relax, rejuvenate and come back a healthier, happier person. Take the time to heal yourself, mind and body, as often as possible.
